The Brigands force both players to lose all their wool and gold, if they have more than seven resources. The Event dice on the other hand determines which random event takes place. Each player can have no more than three of any given resource in a tile. Instead, the resource tile is turned, showing how many items of a certain resource a player has. There are no resource cards like in the boardgames of Catan. One side produces wheat on a 6, while the other produces gold the second side needs a 5 for wheat.

The number allocation for the two factions' resources is not identical. Both players benefit from the result of the Production die. Each player starts with three cards in his hand. Settlements count for one point (meaning that the players start with 2 points already each), cities count for two, while the Hero token and the Trade token add a victory point each. That would be 7 for the Introductory game, 12 for the Theme game and 13 for the Duel of the Princes. The objective is to reach a number of victory points at the end of your turn. The principality is composed of two settlements, a road, and six productive tiles relating to the five known resources of Catan (wood, brick, wool, wheat, ore), as well as gold. Gameplay: Each player tries to develop his personal, nine-card principality that extends before him. The first time I perused the present product however has been during the playtests for the present review. I have also participated in competitive events years back, achieving top-3 placements at my best.

In the interest of full disclosure I have been playing Catan (then called Settlers of Catan) since 1999, along with all its expansions and extensions, as well as the then Settlers of Catan Card Game. The Deluxe Special Promo Cards included in this edition are also sold separately, for those who own the initial Rivals of Catan and do not wish to repurchase everything. Just like the games it reimplements, and in contract to the Catan boardgames, all the cards in this game are square at 69 x 69 cm.
